Rising Above the Pressure: Why Winter is the Right Time for Mental Health Training

Every year, the same assumption plays out: winter pressures mean training gets deprioritised. Staff are too busy. The system is too stretched. Education can wait until things calm down.

We’ve found the opposite to be true.

Last winter was our busiest period ever. Not despite the pressures – because of them.

When we dug into why, three things became clear:

1) Value Has to Land Immediately

When staff are stretched thin, they don’t have patience for training that promises future benefits. They need skills they can use that shift.

Our training opens with patient stories – real accounts of what helped and what didn’t during hospital stays. Within the first five minutes, staff are picking up language and approaches they’ll use before their next break.

This isn’t about “nice to know” information. It’s about practical skills that make the next difficult conversation slightly less difficult.

2) Accessibility is Everything

Winter destroys the best-laid training plans. Sessions get cancelled. Staff get redeployed. Cover falls through.

Any training that requires booking, fixed attendance times, or specific devices doesn’t survive contact with winter reality.

We designed for this. Staff complete modules on phones during quiet moments. They pick up where they left off when they get home. Progress saves automatically between interruptions. The trust still sees completion data centrally.

When you remove the friction, staff find the time – even in the hardest months.

3) Winter is When These Skills Matter Most

Winter is exactly when mental health skills become most critical.

Longer waits. Higher acuity. More patients in distress – regardless of why they came to hospital. Every member of staff, from reception to discharge, encounters people who need support.

Staff know this. They feel it. And when you offer them practical tools during the moment they need them most, they engage.

The Real Question

Winter pressures are real. But they’re not a reason to pause mental health education – they’re the reason to prioritise it.

The question isn’t whether staff have time for training. It’s whether your training is designed for the reality they’re working in.

How We Support Our Partners

All We Can Talk partners receive access to a hub of communication resources to support their programme – including our Winter Guide, which highlights key messaging for staff, the advantages of on-demand access, and practical ways to promote training during high-pressure periods.
